Workshop Description

You know how to use a computer for your own personal and professional tasks and you've been using the computer in your classroom for various activities.  But, what is the connection between learning and the way your students use computers?  How is student learning improving as a result of using computers in your classroom? In this workshop, we'll explore this question and take a look at the technologies with which we are already familiar and those that are being developed that can assist students in using both process and thinking skills in order to impact student learning.

 

 

Workshop Goals/Outcomes

Teachers will understand declarative and procedural knowledge and the strategies we use to teach these in our classrooms.

 

Teachers will understand the following tools and how their use supports student learning of declarative and procedural knowledge via process and thinking skills.

Wikispaces/PBWiki

  • communication and collaboration
  • research and information fluency
  • critical thinking

KidPix

  • communication through visual media
  • research and information fluency-organize information, compile information and present conclusions

Kidspiration/Inspiration

  • communication and collaboration - communicate ideas clearly, manage responsibilities of team members, elaborate idea
  • research and information fluency - organize information, data and ideas; compile information to report results
  • critical thinking - identify similarities and differences, classifying, systems analysis, decision making, problem solving,etc.
